According to contemporary witnesses, Walter Rutt was considered a “cycling fanatic” well into his old age.

During a stay in Denmark, he claimed to have forgotten his wristwatch at the beach after a trip there. He said he had to ride his bike back to retrieve it. Part of the watch face was visible under the sleeve of his jacket.
