This early form of a “self shot” shows an unknown tourist in front of Walter Rutt's sports restaurant. The shop window displays an advertising poster for an upcoming six-day race.

The photo comes from an album containing numerous impressions of the city of Berlin in the 1920s.

While the postcard in the chapter “The Rutt Arena” shows the velodrome in an early stage of construction, this later example shows the grandstands that were added later. Inside the velodrome, the trees were cut down and seating was installed. In the center of the picture, you can see a boxing ring.

Signed postcard

Signed postcard

Walter Rutt must have signed countless autographs in his lifetime. He always wrote his characteristic signature with great care.

When a fan asked for an autograph at the velodrome back then, the writing implement they carried was usually a pencil, as fountain pens were considered a luxury item. Since this signature was written in ink and includes both a greeting and a date from his active career, it is a special gem in the collection.
